COMMENTARY

We will never know this side of Glory to what lengths God has gone to insure our safety against the beasts of hell. He has not only sent forth His holy angels to protect us and encircle us with His power, but the Lord Jesus himself has fought repeated battles for us without our even knowing about it. He is “the Captain and Bishop of our souls.” (I Peter 2:25 KJV) In this office he strikes terror in the hearts of demons. He demoralizes the evil ones, unsettling their thinking with sheer confusion.
This poem demonstrates the swiftness with which God responds when His children are in imminent danger from the devil. The attack is swift and furious, but God’s Son appears and,

We fought ‘till day was fully spent,
And triumphed through the night;
